Student Media Board (SMB) Public Hearing on Student Fee Increase

September 23, 4:00pm - 5:00pm
Mānoa Campus, Campus Center 308

Student Media Board (SMB) oversees Ka Leo, ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ Productions, HawaiÊ»i Review, and KTÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥. It is even more vital today to have a robust student media on campus. Student media is student led and provides an avenue for student voices to be heard. Student media programs help students develop the necessary skills in leadership, management and citizenry. Student media programs are funded almost entirely by a mandatory student fee. Currently, the combined fee for the Board of Publications (BOP) and Broadcast Communications Authority (BCA) is $16 per semester and it has not increased since the 1980s. Since then, rising costs have required significant budget reductions, which have affected program operations. SMB is proposing to raise this fee by $34 (or $1 a week for the academic year) which will bring the fee to $50. Come hear options about the implementation of this fee and how it will restore and sustain student media at ÃÛÌÇÖ±²¥ ²ÑÄå²Ô´Ç²¹. Two public hearings will be held at Campus Center 308 to share information about the fee increase proposal: Monday, September 22, 4pm - 5pm, and Tuesday, September 23, 4pm - 5pm. SMB will present its proposal and take questions and concerns. All are welcome. The Public is also welcomed over zoom: Join Zoom Meeting https://hawaii.zoom.us/j/81760112841 Meeting ID: 817 6011 2841 Passcode: SMB
