Is There a Fiduciary Duty to Destroy Nature?
September 5, 3:30pm - 4:30pmMānoa Campus, Bilger 150
School of Life Sciences' Friday Seminar Series welcomes Dr. Attila Balogh, Assistant Professor of Finance at the University of Melbourne. ****This seminar explores the tension between corporate fiduciary duty and biodiversity conservation. In most jurisdictions, directors and managers are legally bound to maximize shareholder value, even when it undermines ecological integrity. Dr. Balogh introduces core finance concepts such as firm value, performance metrics, and fiduciary duty. Using evidence from environmental, social, and governance (ESG) data and event studies, Dr. Balogh shows how markets react to environmental risks and highlight the deeper challenge: quantifying firms’ true impact on biodiversity and ecosystems.
